New rules on Net neutrality could mean loss of jobs

In recent months, The Star has reported extensively on the down economy and resulting job losses. We had hoped that the worst days were behind us, but now the Federal Communications Commission is considering putting new regulations on the Internet that could kill jobs in Indiana and across the country.

The FCC is debating an issue this month that many people call Net neutrality, and it is something that we all need to watch closely.

Ultimately, the FCC wants to regulate the Internet and we are concerned that the agency’s actions could bring new investment in broadband networks to a halt. When the telecom companies are investing, it means more work for skilled labor. And even during this down economy, the telecom companies have been investing billions of dollars in new infrastructure. That’s good news for the Communications Workers of America because investment in wired and wireless broadband means jobs.

We think that Net neutrality is a bad idea. The Internet is working fine. Telecom companies are investing and the CWA is building the networks that are the future of the Internet. New regulations are not needed.
