Before psychedelic bands of the 1960s, freedom to improvise was heard in jazz and blues performances but not in rock ‘n’ roll, Phil Christopher says.

Mumbai Taxi is Christopher’s rock-meets-world band that operates on the fly.

“If you give yourself permission to invent music as you play it, you’re never really trapped,” the guitarist-vocalist says. “Even the three-minute song isn’t a closed box.”

Christopher heaps praise on Mumbai Taxi drummer Kevin Kouts, whose credits range from country band Stockwell Road to tropical party band Dog Talk, and percussionist Baba Akinwala Yudiddiyuh, a longtime practitioner of West African and Afro-Caribbean rhythms.

“The guy with the hand drum is actually setting everything up for the rest of us,” Christopher says.
