Mourners hold prayer vigil at Cumberland apartment
About 60 people bowed their heads and prayed for peace Wednesday during a vigil at the Cumberland apartment where a man was gunned down last week.
The mourners huddled beneath umbrellas as a steady rain fell outside the townhouse unit where Andrew Rhea, 19, was shot to death March 11 at the Arbors of Cumberland in the 11500 block of East Colonywood Drive.
“Let us pray for one another and pray for the family as they continue to try to make sense out of this senseless death,” said Joe Zelenka of the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis. He led prayers asking for peace, comfort and the will to forgive.
Jana Waldon, Rhea’s mother, said her son was planning to join the Air Force. She said the support from the community has helped lift her family’s spirits.
“(The vigil) is an awesome way to make people aware of the violence in our community,” Waldon said.
Police believe Rhea was killed in an attempted robbery. Cumberland Police Chief Mike Crooke said Wednesday that detectives are narrowing in on a suspect. They are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers, (317) 262-TIPS.
