Looking for a little adventure, some great entertainment and gourmet food? Cruises are gaining steam.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) estimates 13.2 million travelers took cruises in 2008, an increase from 12.56 million in 2007.

The association’s research also shows that 66.2 percent of travel agents expect 2009 revenue for cruising to equal or exceed revenue for 2008, with demand increasing in 2010.

“Cruising is more in vogue. It’s becoming the vacation of choice,” said Tim Platt, general manager for Indianapolis Tour and Travel (www.indytnt.com).

What’s the appeal? Most cruise lines cater to the ages and interests of travelers, offering everything from spa treatments to on-board shopping.

Value and flexibility make cruising popular for corporate events, family reunions, honeymoons and vacations.

“There are a variety of clients who choose cruises, from empty nesters to families,” said Platt. “The key is to check options with a travel agent.”

Alaska has become a popular destination, and now through September is an ideal time to go, said Platt. Christmas and into spring is the best time to take a Caribbean cruise, and winter is an economical time to take trans-Atlantic trips.

A 15-night trip out of Miami through the Panama Canal to San Diego runs about $1,000 now; a three-night trip from Miami to the Bahamas runs about $189, said Platt.

“Cruises are appealing because they are economical ways to travel, and it’s like a five-star resort — very luxurious, similar to an all-inclusive resort,” said Platt. “The cost includes the food, Broadway-style entertainment, and a sense of adventure without moving from hotel to hotel.”
