The 2008 LayFlats Arts and Music Festival has stepped up the the environmental plate this year, and they like to think they hit one out of the park!

Reducing energy consumption is hard to do when you are running a five stage arts and music festival on a grass-roots budget. Ideally we would power the entire festival with wind and solar energy, but logistically and financially this is not an option.

So how do we reduce the impact our music festival has on the environment? Renewable Energy Credits!

Renewable energy credits or renewable energy certificates are the most logical way for an event such as ours to reduce our carbon footprint. By purchasing REC's we offset our carbon output by investing in carbon-free forms of electricity. This can be through the purchase of wind, solar, geothermal, or biomass.

The overall impact of the LayFlats Festival was calculated by multiplying the number of expected attendees by the average expected driving distance, then adding to that the size and scope of the festival itself, and came up with a total of 48 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

In order to offset this impact, and to allow for an incredible turnout, this years festival has been offset by purchasing enough credits to offset 90 metric tons of CO2!
