Meet the Teacher: Rachel Stein
Grade/subject/school: First grade at Allisonville Elementary School in Washington Township.
Number of years teaching: Seven.
Work e-mail: rstein@msdwt.k12.in.us
Background/schooling: Bachelor’s degree from Manchester College. Graduate of Clay High School, Class of 1998, in South Bend. I am currently working on my master’s degree at Ball State University.
Why did you become a teacher: In high school, I participated in the Cadet Teaching Program where I was able to go into elementary classrooms and work with students of various ages. This program helped me discover my love for teaching. I love working with children and watching them construct knowledge in their own ways. One of the joys of teaching is seeing a child’s eyes light up when they learn something new. I have always had a love for learning, and I wanted to be able to share that passion with others. I think the best place for me to share my passion for learning is in a classroom.
What goals do you have for your students: It is my job as a teacher to help my students discover their potential. I want my students to become lifelong learners and to be successful. I encourage my students to always do their personal best and to never give up. I want my students to believe in themselves and to have the confidence to take on any challenge life may throw their way.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I encourage parents to read to their child every day or have their child read to them.
Name your favorite movie: “The Notebook,” “Remember the Titans,” “The Dark Knight.”
Name your favorite musician or band: It is very difficult for me to pick a favorite musician or band. I love music. Here are a few of my favorites: . . . Daughtry, Beyonce, Rascal Flatts, John Legend and Alicia Keys.
What’s something your students might not know about you: I love to sing karaoke even though I am a horrible singer.
