Meet the Teacher: Kristie Cassidy
Grade/subject, school: Third-grade teacher, Noble Crossing Elementary.
Number of years teaching: This will be my 11th year.
Background/schooling: I have a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s degree from Ball State University.
Why did you become a teacher: I always loved school. I was the child who would be all over the room helping the other students with their work once mine was done. I remember being praised for my enthusiasm to want to help others — but also being told that I needed to let them do their own work! There is nothing better than knowing you have made a positive difference in the life of a child.
What goals do you have for your students: Each year, my goal is for every one of my students to learn to love reading and writing. I also want them to see school as a fun place where they can learn, grow and be challenged in a safe and nurturing environment.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I always remind parents about the importance of supporting reading at home, not only by making sure that their child reads independently every day but also by setting aside time to read and discuss books together. I ask them to use real-life examples to further their child’s learning. For example, working on writing and math skills when shopping for groceries. I also encourage them to use technology — there are many great sites out there on the Internet that are both fun and educational.
Name your favorite movie: “Titanic.”
Name your favorite musician or band: I truly enjoy all kinds of music, so I really don’t have just one favorite. I have a very eclectic CD collection!
What’s something your students might not know about you: They might be surprised to learn that I am a veteran. I spent eight years active duty in the Air Force, reaching the rank of sergeant. I was deployed to Spain for three months in support of Operation Desert Storm.
