Why did you become a teacher: I became a teacher because I love working with children and helping them learn. I enjoyed my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Timms. I also loved working on my math facts when I was a student. Timed tests were my favorite part of math every day. My other favorite teacher, Mr. Gambrel — my junior year English teacher — made learning fun. I try to use both of them as influences for teaching in my classroom.
What goals do you have for your students:
My goal every year is for my students is to master their multiplication facts. I stress to them every day that any math, whether addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, will show up in some form in their everyday life. This is a lifelong tool to have, so we really work on mastering these skills every day.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I encourage parents to work with their children on their homework. Too many times children tell me their parents didn’t help them or didn’t go over their work. If parents want to know what their children are doing in class, the first place to look for that information is homework each night. I also encourage parents to read to their children or have their children read to them. Reading out loud helps everyone, young or old, so practice, practice, practice.
Name your favorite movies: “Die Hard,” “Enchanted,” “10 Things I Hate About You” (to name a few). I have a lot.
Name your favorite musicians or bands: Toby Keith, Michael Buble and Jason Mraz.
What’s something your students might not know about you: My favorite flower is the daffodil. My favorite subjects in school were math and science.
