Grade/subject/school: Grade 4.

Number of years teaching: Three.

Work e-mail: hboger@warren.k12.in.us

Background/schooling: Bachelor’s degree in aviation management, Southern Illinois University; master’s degree in education, Indiana University.

Why did you become a teacher: For the majority of my elementary/high school experience, I was unmotivated. I wasn’t intrigued by the subject matter and was not motivated by the teacher. However, I did occasionally encounter a teacher that was enthusiastic, engaging and inspiring. These positive experiences made me realize I could reach students that aren’t motivated or are disengaged.

What goals do you have for your students: I want my fourth-graders to develop good habits that will translate into active, inquisitive lifelong learners. I don’t want them to be passive participants in the academic process. Instead, I want them to have initiative and independence as they seek their own knowledge and pursue their own passions.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I want parents to make sure their student has something to read at home . . . something the student wants to read (as opposed to has to read). This can come from the school, the public library, home . . . whatever. I hope the parents are having conversations with their students about what they read. What’s it about? What happened when you read tonight? What are you learning from it? Why do you like it?

Name your favorite movie: “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Name your favorite musician or band: Elvis.

What’s something your students might not know about you: When I was 35, I tried out for the play “Grease” on a dare from my fellow Marines and got a lead role.
