Meet the Teacher: Amanda Roberts
Grade/subject at what school: First grade, Crestview Elementary, Lawrence Township.
Number of years teaching: Six.
Work e-mail: amanda roberts@msdlt.k12.in
Background/schooling: Bachelor’s degree, Marian College.
Why did you become a teacher: My mom has told me that I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in preschool. She said I liked the idea of telling people what to do. I remember that I wanted to become a teacher because of my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Smith. She made learning so much fun that it never felt like school. Her connection to all of her students was amazing. She made everyone feel like the most special superstar student. I knew I wanted to make kids feel as great as she made me feel that year.
What goals do you have for your students: My number one goal for my students is to feel comfortable and special in the classroom. Learning is not going to happen if the children are not comfortable or confident in me as their teacher. I want them all to reach their highest possible potential. I will do everything I can to make them realize that with hard work and perseverance anything is achievable.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: Spend time each night reading with your child or just having them tell you about their day. Examples include what they did, or what they learned without letting the answer be nothing or I don’t know.
Name your favorite movie: “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns.” They are equal.
Name your favorite musician or band: Brad Paisley.
What’s something your students might not know about you: I am afraid of earthworms.
