Novelties back in black (and pink) - video included
In the colorful language of guitarist Andy Rexia, Latex Novelties threw glam rock and punk rock in a blender in 1978 and spat the results onto Indianapolis.
The Novelties earned recognition as the city’s first punk band, an antidote to lengthy guitar solos and grandiose production heard in mainstream music.
“On the radio, you had to sing like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and have a billion dollars worth of equipment,” says guitarist Greg Knox. “I like clever minimalism, myself.”
The reunited Novelties — Rexia, Knox, bass player Gregory Dean, drummer Davey Cretin and vocalist Justin Allen — will play an all-ages show Jan. 30 at ES Jungle.
Influenced by New York City’s Ramones and Detroit’s Iggy Pop, the Novelties adopted a pink-and-black color scheme and wore fishnet stockings, police uniforms and coveralls inspired by the droogs of “A Clockwork Orange” during appearances.
The Novelties frequently performed at Crazy Al’s, now the site of the Jazz Kitchen at 54th Street and College Avenue, before the band dissolved amid health problems.
In the late 1980s, vocalist Willie “Peter Pills” Ferguson and his brother, drummer Mo “Geek” Ferguson, died of complications from congenital heart defects, Knox says.
In 2007, drummer Cretin coaxed record labels Rave Up (based in Italy) and Pelado to reissue the band’s early recordings.
For a 2007 reunion show, Dean, Rexia, Knox and Cretin asked Justin Allen, animated mouthpiece in the departed Slurs, to sit in for a few numbers.
Allen, at least one generation younger than his fellow Novelties, says the offer wouldn’t do.
“The Novelties nail everything I love about music,” he says. “That’s why I said, ’I’m going to do the whole thing or I’m not going to do it at all.’.”
Regardless of age gaps, a youthful spirit endures. As Knox says: “Who wants to grow up?”
