Record: 1-1. Last time out: L 35-19 to Duke.

Losing to Duke is acceptable, if not expected, in basketball. Football, with a second-string quarterback leading the way? Not so much.

Army had only itself to blame. It ran well but was doomed by three turnovers that led to 17 Duke points. Two interceptions were returned for touchdowns.

“Obviously, you can see why we don’t do that a lot,” coach Rich Ellerson said of passing. “We aren’t especially good at it.”

Army’s triple option attack accounted for 266 yards rushing on 57 carries. Patrick Mealy had 99 yards rushing, though 55 came on his first carry. Five teammates had at least 10 yards.

That doesn’t bode well for Ball State, which has been shaky against the run.

The Cardinals have given up an average of 203 yards in their first two games — both losses.
