Man who faked being a deputy is due in court

A man accused of taking two TV sets after passing himself off as a sheriff’s deputy is scheduled to appear in court today.
Gary Apollos, 24, was charged Tuesday with criminal confinement, impersonating a public servant, theft and intimidation.
According to a court document, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called April 2 on a complaint of a police officer removing a television set from a home. The victim said the man, who said he was with the Sheriff’s Department, took her television after telling her it had been stolen.
The next day, IMPD received a similar call from a woman who said a man who appeared to be a sheriff’s deputy came into her house and said her television had been stolen. He removed it from her house, according to police reports.
IMPD officials said a fingerprint that matched Apollos’ was found on a note he left with the first victim. He was arrested Monday and was held Tuesday at the Marion County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
The most serious charge against Apollos, criminal confinement, carries a possible prison sentence of six to 20 years.
Mario Massillamany, spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, said the man did not wear a full uniform but had a utility belt and a gun and what appeared to be a badge. The criminal confinement charge stems from one of the incidents in which the man, with the gun in view, ordered one of the victims to remain in a room.
