An unidentified Indianapolis man is in grave condition after breaking up a fight between his pit bull and a neighbor’s Doberman this afternoon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responding to a dog attack call just before 2 p.m. today arrived at the home in the 500 block of N. Oakland Avenue and found the 53-year-old male suffering from an apparent heart attack, according to a news release from Sgt. Matt Mount.

The man’s pit bull had broken its chain and was fighting with a neighbor’s dog. Mount said that both dogs suffered injuries, but no human was bitten.

The unidentified man was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in grave condition. A granddaughter who was visiting the man was taken by authorities until her parents could be found, Mount said.

Animal control officers confiscated the pit bull, while the Doberman was returned to its owners.
