Man dies in Eastside shooting; IMPD on scene
Indianapolis metropolitan police are investigating a deadly shooting this morning on the city’s Eastside.
Police responded to a call at 11:44 a.m. of an unidentified 22-year-old man suffering gunshot wound in the middle of the Blackburn Terrace Apartment complex in the 2100 block of East 32nd.
Lt. Jeff Duhamell, a spokesman for IMPD, said several shots were fired in parking lot just south of 32nd Street.
He said IMPD is investigating whether the man is a former resident of the complex who may have been banned from the property.
Dozens of people were reported on the scene at this hour, watching as police interview witnesses and examine evidence. By 1:30 p.m., the coroner’s office removed the body.
Several people were outside at the time the shooting happened, Duhamell said, and police are trying to talk to all of them.
Pierre Dunn, a maintenance man at the public housing complex, was getting ready to do some work when the violence struck. “I heard the gunshots and I saw that guy laying down there,” Dunn said.
Duhamell said police are looking for a white cargo van, possibly with a ladder rack on top, and the letters “REH” on the back. The vehicle, possibly a Chevy, also may be missing window on one side, Duhamell said.
Investigators are on the scene and are interviewing witnesses. No motive has been established.
Anyone with information is asked to call IMPD’s homicide division at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at (317) 232-TIPS.
