An unidentified Indianapolis man was in grave condition after breaking up a fight between his pit bull and a neighbor’s Doberman on Sunday afternoon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responding to a dog-attack call just before 2 p.m. arrived at the home in the 500 block of North Oakland Avenue and found the 53-year-old man suffering from an apparent heart attack, according to a news release from Sgt. Matthew Mount, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The man’s pit bull had broken its chain and was fighting with a neighbor’s dog. Mount said both dogs suffered injuries, but no human was bitten. The unidentified man was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in grave condition.

Mount said a granddaughter who was visiting the man was taken by authorities until her parents could be found. Animal control officers confiscated the pit bull, while the Doberman was returned to its owners.
