Local celebrations set to mark the MLK holiday

The Indianapolis area will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special observances and events. Among them:Indianapolis Urban League, 777 Indiana Ave.: “Freedom Walk on the Avenue.” Doors open at 11 a.m., walk begins at noon. The processional will leave from the front door of the Urban League and head down Indiana Avenue to the Madame Walker Theatre for a program commemorating the life and legacy of King. Free. Ohio St.: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Through historic materials, family activities and crafts, discussions, spoken word, storytelling, and dance and musical performances, participants will learn more about King’s legacy and the important role youths play in our nation’s future. Performers in the Frank and Katrina Basile Theater include the Asante Children’s Theatre, Kenyetta Dance Company, Tasha Jones and the Write Me Project, and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Free.
