Lars Von Trier's Antichrist

I’m not a huge fan of horror movies. Occasionally I’ll be in the mood for a cheesy horror movie to laugh at. There are some horror movies that I do convincingly find frightening and enjoyable, but they are hard for me to find.

Danish director Lars von Trier is probably best known for Breaking the Waves (1996) and the Bjork movie Dancer in the Dark (2000), which just might be the saddest movie I’ve ever seen. On top of being outrageously sad, Dancer in the Dark was also uniquely done visually and aurally in a commendable way.

His next movie will be called Antichrist. It will be starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Willem is pretty much always an exemplary actor, so his involvement is a good sign IMO. The trailer is definitely sinister and eerie. You can check it out here and it may be considered NSFW for some:

So, what do you think?

I’m going to watch this later on. I wasn’t super impressed with Von Trier’s Dogville, but it was a cool sort of filmmaking experiement. If you haven’t seen that, it’s basically a movie that starts off with full sets and slowly the sets start going away and there are outlines on the floor of houses. Nicole Kidman stars in it. If you’re into experimental filmmaking, it’s worth a look, but it’s pretty long and dull at times-I think it closes in on 3 hours.

This makes me want to watch a von Trier film. I haven’t seen anything of his since his Dogma 96 film “The Idiots.” Uncensored! Yes! People pretending to be mentally handicapped having an orgy in natural lighting without external sound or makeup! You heard me!

I liked Dancer in the Dark, but my favorite thing the boy’s done was a Danish television series called The Kingdom. It’s available on DVD. Check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The...

The Kingdom (Danish title: Riget) is an eight-episode Danish television mini-series, created by Lars von Trier in 1994, and co-directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred. It has been edited together into a five-hour movie for distribution in the United Kingdom and United States. It is currently available on DVD in the United States from Koch-Lorber Films and on Madman Entertainment‘s Directors Suite label in Australia/NZ.

The series is set in the neurosurgical ward of Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet, the city and country’s main hospital, nicknamed “Riget”. “Riget” means “the realm” or “the kingdom” and leads one to think of “dødsriget”, the realm of the dead. The show follows a number of characters, both staff and patients, as they encounter bizarre phenomena, both human and supernatural. The show is notable for its wry humor, its muted sepia colour scheme, a sort of “”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog..." title=“Dogme 95”>Dogme“-lite shooting style with added ”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jum..." title=“Jump cut”>jump cuts, and the appearance of a chorus of dishwashers with Down Syndrome who discuss in intimate detail the strange occurrences in the hospital (without ever being involved in the story themselves).

Several episodes end with the Swedish neurosurgeon, Stig Helmer, on the hospital roof, looking longingly out over Øresund towards the Swedish shore line, and yelling “Danskjävlar!” (“Danish bastards!”), after helplessly witnessing another (to him) example of Danish lunacy. Director Lars von Trier appears over the end credits of every show offering enigmatic observations about the plot. The comic elements and perceived “weirdness” in the series have led to comparisons with Twin Peaks.

I will be seeing this, dafoe is bar none one of my favorite actors…just watched him again in auto focus the other night, he is one of those that has a special creepiness about him. I love the horror genre…and from the trailer it looks like it will be a solid entry.
