Construction on a busy Northwestside road could continue for another month.

Lafayette Road between 71st and 79th streets has been closed since March to replace an aging bridge over Eagle Creek.

Construction was originally scheduled to wrap up by the end of October, but that could be delayed until late November, said Kit Werbe, Department of Public Works spokeswoman. The Indiana Department of Transportation extended the completion deadline after the state delayed a notice to proceed on the project before it started.

Grading for the road was scheduled to start Thursday but was delayed until next week because of the rain, Werbe said. The contractors also have paving work to complete.

“The only work remaining on the bridge itself is the railings,” Werbe said. “The contractor began forming those (Thursday), and they likely will be done by the end of next week.”
