BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The debut of the Crean and Crimson era of Indiana University basketball had a little bit of everything Friday night at Assembly Hall.Former players. Future players. Hula girls.Yes, even hula girls were on hand to get the crowd in the mood for next month’s EA Sports Maui Invitational. All of it played to the approval of a crowd estimated at more than 8,000 that turned out for the annual Hoosier Hysteria festivities to kick off the 2008-09 season. The players had a 12-minute scrimmage at the end of the night that gave IU fans their first chance to see what is basically a group of relative unknowns who will suit up for the Hoosiers this season. Kyle Taber is the lone returning scholarship player, but as the evening progressed several fan favorites began to develop.Whether it was 7-foot junior center Tijan Jobe dunking during the scrimmage, Devan Dumes knocking down a 3 or freshman point guard Verdell Jones splitting defenders on his way to a driving basket, IU fans seemed to like what they were seeing."We’re definitely going to be undersized, but I think we’re going to be scrappy, too,‘’ said Troy Gonzalez, an IU fan from Carmel who had a front-row seat. "I thought it was a good night. It just seemed like there was a family atmosphere both with the families of the coaches being introduced and all of the former players who were on hand.’‘Hoosier Hysteria had a little bit of the past, present and future Friday night. The past was represented by 23 former players spanning seven decades of Hoosier basketball. They were introduced to the crowd and shook hands with this year’s players. Later, six joined current players in a series of shooting competitions. The team of former player Todd Leary and freshman Matt Roth defeated senior Kyle Taber and former player Adam Ahlfeld in the final. Leary put on a show, banking one 3-pointer after another from the right wing. The future was present in the form of more than 30 recruits, including the Class of 2009’s Bobby Capobianco, Derek Elston and Christian Watford, and 2011’s Matt Carlino.Several former players talked about the importance of the event. Mike Woodson, coach of the Atlanta Hawks and a former IU standout, said he believes Crean is doing his best to get former players involved again."It’s good to see,‘’ Woodson said. "We’re a family and it seems like the family is coming back together again. I think as Indiana fans we need to rally around this team. There’s a lot of inexperience out there, but they really need our support.‘’Crean seem pleased with the turnout and talked about how he felt the tradition more than ever in Assembly Hall on Friday night. He said the way the crowd reacted to the former players "says a lot about who you are.’‘At the end of the scrimmage, Crean took the microphone and thanked the crowd for coming."We’ve had a great night and this has been an absolute honor,‘’ Crean said. "We’re just so glad to be part of the Hoosier nation. We’re looking forward to making you proud.’’
