Italian director new head of the Turin Film Fest
ROME (AP) -- The Oscar-nominated director Gianni Amelio has been named chief of the Turin Film Festival, which focuses on art-house and indie movies.
The festival named Amelio Wednesday to succeed another Italian director, Nanni Moretti, who said he wanted to work on a new film.
The festival in the northern Italian city has launched some Italian directors' careers and is well-respected in the country's industry. But it lacks glitz and has never grabbed the attention that the Venice Film Festival has.
The 63-year-old Amelio won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1998 with "Cosi' ridevano" ("The Way We Laughed"). He received an Oscar nomination for best foreign language movie with "Porte Aperte" ("Open Doors").
