ISO concertmaster Zach De Pue's iPod favorites
Zach De Pue, 29, was named concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in May 2007. Now in his second season as the orchestra’s first-chair first violinist, he will make his solo concerto debut with the ISO at the Hilbert Circle on March 20, playing Erich Korngold’s Violin Concerto.
But that doesn’t mean he’s entirely a classical case when it comes to music. For example, to pump himself up when he’s out running, he listens to Van Halen, Journey, Muse, Michael Jackson, Guns N’ Roses, Styx, Def Leppard, Eminem, the Outfield — “you get the picture. Eighties hair bands or anything else that rocks out would fit this list,” De Pue says.
Here, he tells us what some of his current iPod favorites are:
Alison Krauss and Union Station: “Lonely Runs Both Ways” “I listen to this album when I am on the road for its introspective vibe.”
Pink Floyd: “The Wall” “A classic — need I say more?”
Muse: “Black Holes and Revelations” “I was just introduced to this alternative rock band by my friend Jacob Strauss, and really dig the epic nature of their music.”
k.d. lang: “Hymns From the 49th Parallel” “My Trio Time for Three opened for her show three years ago, and I have been a fan of hers ever since. This album is a great experience.”
Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder “Any album of theirs, but especially their live album, ‘Live at the Charleston Music Hall.’.”
“Jai Ho” from “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack “I am in love with this whole album right now. Actually, I’m in love with the whole thing: the movie, the music, the characters, the story. A truly great film.”
Stevie Wonder: “Songs in the Key of Life” “Maybe the greatest album ever made by a pop artist.”
Martin Sexton: “The American” “A singer-songwriter from Boston who truly preaches his ideas through music. A one-of-a-kind artist.”
