Internet, community groups can keep eye on government
Recent events highlight the need for increased openness and transparency in government. These steps could be implemented to enhance transparency:
Increased use of the Internet: The posting of budgets in a manner that clearly identifies revenue sources and expenditures on the government Web sites, posting of meeting minutes, and the centralized posting of job openings.
Increased oversight of the awarding of government contracts and decisions regarding budget reductions: The Internet can be used to inform the public of government contracts awarded and provide reasons for reducing or eliminating certain programs or services to reduce budget deficits.
Promotion of effective community groups: One of the driving forces toward increased openness and transparency in the public sector is the development and use of effective community groups that can be engaged to ensure increased levels of accountability in governmental operations.
Implementing these simple measures would go a long way toward building a culture of transparency in government and increasing the confidence of taxpayers that the government exists to promote the best interest of its citizens.
