Indiana’s rock and roll community gathered for a cause Thursday at the Music Mill.

The cause: Raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation on behalf of Verizon Wireless Music Center’s general manager Steve Finkel, a cycling enthusiast who is suffering from bladder cancer.

Three of the state’s major radio stations — WFBQ, Q95 (94.7-FM), WTTS (92.3-FM) and WRZX X103 (103.3-FM), teamed with SG Entertainment’s Steve Gerardi, who helped organize the “Livestrong/Rock Hard” benefit, which featured local rock bands Healing Sixes, Mardelay and Borrow Tomorrow.

About 350 showed up for the fundraiser, which was hosted by Q95 on-air personality Laura Steele, who got teary-eyed more than once while performing her duties. It raised more than $10,000.

During the event, Steele read a letter sent from Finkel, who couldn’t attend because he was in Austin, Texas, for the foundation’s Livestrong Challenge. Finkel wants to bring that benefit to Indianapolis.

The note ended with Finkel telling the Indianapolis crowd: “You are all shining stars in my night sky.”

Last night’s crowd included: new Music Mill owner Ravi Chopra, Gerardi, Debby “Fergy” Ferguson, CEO of TourDesign, and WTTS’ on-air personalities Brad Holtz and Laura Duncan.
