Bob Goodrum took to the roof when searching out mentors for Starfish Initiatives.

The director of mentor services set up on top of the small building at 814 N. Delaware St., seeking 48 new mentor pledges in 48 hours.

He took a tent, sleeping bag and laptop up with him Tuesday at 8 a.m., and doesn’t plan on leaving until 8 a.m. Thursday.“The phones are ringing,” he said. “If you tell people there’s a need, they’ll be willing to help.”The nonprofit program based in Indianapolis provides mentors and tutors for low-income high school students.First Lady Cheri Daniels joined Goodrum on the roof today in his quest to get a mentor for every child in its program. Starfish currently have an even students-to-mentors ratio at 250, but Goodrum expects 300 students by August. Daniels said Goodrum’s tactic was an interesting way to gain support.“He’s obviously bringing a lot of awareness by stepping out of the box,” she said.
