Indianapolis Opera patrons choose 'Mikado'
The Indianapolis Opera has listened to its patrons and chosen its productions for 2009-10 based on those preferences.
The third production next season will be “The Mikado,” a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta that has not been produced here since 1985 (also an Indianapolis Opera production).
John Pickett, executive director of the Indianapolis Opera, said that the end-of-the-season polling, which closed June 1 and included online and regular-mail voting, had a Gilbert and Sullivan work virtually tied with Verdi’s “La Traviata” out of about 300 ballots cast.
As a result, the people’s choice will also influence the 2010-11 season, which Pickett expects to open with “La Traviata.”
“The Mikado” will be presented March 19 and 21 in Clowes Hall.
Other productions next season are “Ariadne auf Naxo,s” by Richard Strauss, with Indiana natives Angela Brown and Jane Dutton in major roles, and Indiana University graduate Rachele Gilmore as Zerbinetta. Joachim Schamberger, who directed “Das Rheingold” to end the 2008-09 season, will direct the Oct. 2 and 4 production.
Puccini’s “La Boheme” will follow Nov. 20 and 22 with Maureen O’Flynn, whose credits inlcude the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala, making her Indianapolis Opera debut as Mimi.
