MARKLE, Ind. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing a $54,000 fine for a northeast Indiana parts manufacturer for pollution violations.

The EPA says Wayne Metals LLC emitted excessive amounts of hazardous air pollutants in 2007 from its plant in Markle, about 20 miles south of Fort Wayne.

Wayne Metals President Greg Meyers says the pollution came from the plant’s metal-coating facility. He says the emissions only became a problem after the company switched manufacturing processes to reduce other pollutants.

Myers said because of the switch, the company’s releases of hazardous air pollutants has dropped from 28,750 pounds in 2006 to zero in 2009.
