Indiana Muslims denounce Fort Hood shootings
Indiana’s Muslim community is reacting swiftly to denounce the mass shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, which appear to have been perpetrated by a Muslim Army officer.
“As American Muslims, we are terribly saddened and hurt by the cruel and unthinking loss of life experienced by those that are fighting for our nation,” according to a statement from the Muslim Alliance of Indiana, an association of mosques, Islamic centers and individuals from around the state. “We also want to reiterate that Islam never condones violence and as Muslims we are deeply revolted by the actions of the shooter.”
The Plainfield-based Islamic Society of North America — an umbrella organization national in scope — joined other Muslim organizations in denouncing what it called a “barbaric act of violence.”
The Nur-Allah Islamic Center, a Northside Indianapolis mosque, issued a statement saying its prayers would be with the families touched by “these hurtful events.” “We pray that our American society does not see these actions as religious-based; rather they see such misdeeds as acts borne by individuals acting outside the high values of faith,” it said.
Imam Michael Saahir said he sees nothing in Islamic teachings that would justify the shootings at Fort Hood.
Authorities identified the shooter who killed 13 people and wounded many more as Nidal Malik Hassan, a major in the Army. Several news organizations reported that Hassan was a Muslim who had been harassed for his faith. Reports have also said Hassan objected to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
