Include time at home in school time debate

In the Sept. 30 article, “State panel will revive time debate for school days,” Stephen Stephanoff says that deciding on a longer school day is “really a matter of where you want a society to go.” He is right. However, Stephanoff’s ultimate goal is that our children “become as productive and effective as they can be,” so schools need “as much time as (they) can to work with them.” President Obama agrees.

“Productive and effective” are admirable qualities that I hope my children will grow to possess. However, I want so much more for them. Outside of school, my children learn fitness through sports; develop talents through music; develop spiritually through church activities; spend valuable family time in work, play and service; learn duty to God and country through scouting; and, yes, even play outside with their friends just for fun. (All this after finishing homework, of course.)

For this vital education to occur, children need to be home. Create optional after-school programs for children living in difficult situations, but let me have time with my family to raise my children as I see best. Remember that there is more to education than sitting in a classroom.
