Two years after a group of trees was removed from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the track will help plant new trees at a public park a short distance away.

At 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Speedway employees will plant 40 trees at Gustafson Park, 3100 Moller Road, an Indy Parks property across the street from the track’s largest parking lot.

The tree planting is part of a NASCAR promotion from July’s Brickyard 400 stock car race, where the Speedway promised to plan ten trees for each time the green flag was displayed. With the green being shown at the start of the race and once after each of three cautions, the green was waved four times on race day.

The planting comes two years after a group of trees was removed from the inside of the track’s southwest turn to make room for additional turns for the Speedway’s infield road course, to change the layout for the MotoGP motorcycle race that began in 2008.
