IMPD seeks video clues in road-rage death
Police hope nearby video cameras may contain the break they need in a road-rage incident that left an Indianapolis woman dead early Saturday morning.Kathy J. Slater, 38, Indianapolis, was killed when her Chevrolet Caprice hit a tree on Keystone Avenue near 35th Street after a confrontation with another driver. As she and two friends left a White Castle restaurant near 38th Street and Keystone, police think Slater may have turned right on red in front of a white Nissan.According to witnesses, words were exchanged between the two drivers and the Nissan suddenly changed lanes in front of Slater’s Caprice, causing her to swerve to the left to avoid a collision.“Instead of recomposing himself (after Slater pulled in front of him), the driver sped up and started a verbal confrontation that quickly escalated,” said Jeffrey Duhamell, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Two people in Slater’s vehicle suffered serious injuries. Angela Lamb, 44, was in critical condition, and Clifton Benson, 19, was in serious condition Saturday at Methodist Hospital, authorities said.Duhamell said investigators hoped nearby video cameras might provide a clue to the identity of the Nissan driver.Slater, who hadn’t had a valid driver’s license since 2000, had a court date next month for driving on a suspended license.Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the driver of the Nissan to call Crime Stoppers at 262-8477.
