IMA shuts down after power outage
The Indianapolis Museum of Art is closed today after a falling tree snapped power lines.
Safety concerns prompted museum officials to shut their doors this morning as crews worked to restore power after a tree fell overnight and knocked down power lines near 38th Street and Michigan Road.
The museum, 4000 Michigan Road, is running backup generators, but they can be unreliable at times, spokeswoman Katie Zarich said.
"It is not safe to have visitors in the building today," Zarich said. "We have so few windows that when it gets dark, it really gets dark."
Much of the art is sensitive to extreme temperatures, Zarich said, and the main function of the generators is to maintain the climate in the building.
Michigan Road was closed in both directions between 38th St and White River due to downed wires. Southbound traffic was diverted at 42nd.

I was really curious as to why the traffic signals were out around the museum today. The police officers were not directing traffic, so it was a little scary.
Anyone have an update on this yet? Are they up and running?
