it'll come eventually. IKEA makes more money than god. it will wind up being in Plainfield or Brownsburg or Avon or something out there though. they require quite a bit of land. you won't be seeing an IKEA downtown.

There is plenty of land inside of Marion Co. for one.. but yeah they generally are located in the 'burbs which is fine. I'd rather drive 30 minutes instead of 2-3 hours.

I emailed them a few years back begging them to build one here haha. My parents live in Canada about 30 minutes from one. Everytime I visit them I visit IKEA. I love that place. My friend keeps telling me we need to take a road trip to Cincy but she only wants to go to IKEA and back. That's crazy! If I'm driving that far I want to do other things too.

I've been in IKEAs plenty of times. At this point in my life however, I'd have a problem buying things there considering they sell inexpensive goods from China. I can't help but suspect the labor practices are pretty bad. But if you have evidence otherwise, please correct me. Regardless, I think buying local is best, and in terms of buying goods from the global marketplace, certified fair trade is the way to go.

i dont know of their manufacturing practices since everything i buy from ikea requires assembly. i do know that their labor practices for employees is better than any of the other BIG BOX retailers in america. health care for 30+hr workers, breaks, i just dont know about union representation. good question.

i guess my original post was intended to garner two kinds of responses: 1) yea im pissed there isnt one here yet and that ohio sucks 2) forget ikea. i know this shop that sells amazing furniture for a fair price.

i guess the lack of responses either cement my fear that indy.com is red state true and through or that most hoosiers just dont give a crap about having good looking stuff in their house.

that was an awesome post! hilarious! as for local furniture stores... they suck! i bought a house and made a conscious decision to go 99% Ikea free. i have one dresser in my closet and some kitchen handles from ikea and the rest is Ikea-free. i cannot stand Crate & Barrel but CB2 (think Gap vs. Old Navy if Old Navy was way cool) is the absolute shiz! it's in Chicago but worth the drive. in Indy there's a great place on Shadeland called Antiques and More. it's awesome. some great modern pieces there and unbelievably cheap! no joke. got a ton of stuff from them. those Danish places and Houseworks here all have cool stuff but it's overpriced. the only other place i saw some decent prices was at the place on the corner of 86th and Allisonville. Think it's called Rooms Galore. some nice sale stuff. hope that helps.

I'm not really sure Ikea counts as good looking stuff :-) Most people can't pull off Swedish minimalism as a decor.

I've built a lot of rooms with Ikea built ins and bits and bobs, more often than not the stuff just looks kind of cheap when it's next to nice furniture.

I definately agree it's not bad looking, and is a step above what you can get at Walmart and Best Buy for furniture.
