Indiana’s 3 goals in 1st period chase Fargo goalie, move Ice within 1 win of championship

The Indiana Ice poured it on early Wednesday, scoring three times in a 44-second span of the first period en route to a 6-0 victory over the host Fargo Force in Game 3 of the Clark Cup finals.

Ice goaltender Brett Bennett stopped 21 shots for the shutout and his eighth playoff victory as the Ice took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series for the U.S. Hockey League championship.

Game 4 is at 8:05 p.m. Friday in Fargo.

Mike Cichy had two goals and two assists. Ben Albertson and Shane Berschbach each had a goal and an assist.

Berschbach got the Ice started with a power-play goal 3:30 into the game, with assists from Cichy and Torey Krug.

Albertson scored 31 seconds later with assists from Zach Golembiewski and Brent Gwidt.

Max Cook scored an unassisted goal 13 seconds later to chase Fargo’s starting goalie, Mike Lee, who stopped only three of seven shots after winning his first seven playoff starts.

“We came out on fire in the first period,” Cichy said in a news release from the Ice. “Then we kind of slowed down. We then regrouped in the final two periods, played great team hockey and never looked back.”

Cichy scored his two goals in the second period, the first assisted by Grant Blakey and Albertson, the second by Berschbach and Brandon Richardson on a power play. Cichy assisted on John Parker’s goal in the third. Cichy’s playoff point total grew to 22, with two goals and seven assists in his past four games.
