His vodka made the cut, even if he didn't
Hoosiers saw a lot of the professional golfers — on and off the course — who competed at the U.S. Senior Open that concluded Aug. 2 at Carmel’s Crooked Stick Golf Club.
Fuzzy Zoeller , promoting his new Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka, spent time behind the bar at Ruth’s Chris Steak House near 96th Street and Keystone Avenue and at local liquor stores signing bottles.
Although Zoeller, who has won The Masters and the U.S. Open, was tending bar, he said he didn’t really work too hard.
“I put ice in the glasses — that’s what I did,” Zoeller said last week.
When he wasn’t making public appearances, Zoeller stayed with family and friends, including his daughter, Heidi Hubler and her husband, Greg , general manager of Hubler Mazda in Greenwood.
Zoeller, who lives in Floyds Knobs in Southern Indiana, failed to make the cut in the tournament.
Greg Norman , who tied for fourth in the Open, held a July 28 reception at Carmel’s Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel.
Attendees included buyers of “The Shark’s” clothing line for golf shops as well as Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman. After the event, Norman and his staff headed to Clay Terrace’s Kona Grill for dinner.
Second jobs are first-rate
If you dropped in at Second Helpings for lunch at the right time July 29, you might have been served by Kristi Lee of WFBQ-FM (94.7), along with her daughters.
The occasion: One of Second Helpings’ culinary job-training exercises.
The organization, which helps feed the hungry and trains unemployed adults for careers in the culinary industry, turns itself into a restaurant several times a year to help hone its clients’ skills. Students create the menus, and community members are invited in for a free lunch.
That’s when some recognizable faces — and at least one familiar voice in Lee’s case — volunteer to help.
“That was probably my third or fourth time,” said Lee, who added that her daughters Ava Ritz , 10, and Sophie Ritz , 7, had a great time busing tables and picking up and dropping off food.
Linda Shikany , owner of Broad Ripple clothing store Marigold, served up salads, entrees and desserts at lunch on July 30. Second Helpings director of operations Nora Spitznogle, who also works at the well-known Red Key Tavern, managed the kitchen by calling in orders and filling trays.
If the eyes have it, vote for them
Prevent Blindness Indiana’s Most Beautiful Eyes contest is back after taking a hiatus.
The revived fundraiser will be an Internet competition. Participants are asked to post photos of “beautiful eyes” at www.mostbeautifuleyes.org after its expected launch Aug. 21. The public will pick two top winners by donating $1 per vote, which continues through Sept. 30. A panel of celebrity judges, including Jim Morris , president of Pacers Sports&Entertainment; local artist Nancy Noel ; and Helen Wells , president of the Helen Wells Agency, will also choose a set of winners.
