Batesville-based Hill-Rom, a maker of hospital beds and medical equipment, said today that it planned to consolidate manufacturing operations and restructure its workforce, resulting in at least 300 job losses.

The company hopes to save $12 to $14 million with cuts that will include facilities both in Charleston, S.C., and in Batesville.

"These are painful decisions," said Peter Soderberg, president of Hill-Rom.

Hill-Rom's moves today come a day after Cummins said it would lay off 800 professional workers.

Also new today: >> Beach Mold and Tool Inc. alerted the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it would lay off 193 workers. Company officials say Ford, GM and Mercedes' shutdowns, as well as Honda and Diebold's reduced production, led to the staff reduction. It is not known if or when the affected employees will return to work. Click here to view the company's notice of the mass layoff.

>> Federal-Mogul Corp.'s plan to streamline business processes will cost 55 workers their jobs at its oil seal plant in Frankfort, the Journal & Courier reports. The company alerted the affected workers Friday. The Southfield, Mich.-based company's restructuring plan includes reducing employment levels by 4,600 positions, or 10 percent of its total workforce.

Monday, 550 total manufacturing layoffs were announced, including Kimball International, a Jasper-based furniture maker that plans to lay off up to 75 workers in Borden, Ind.

And now Navistar's future is in doubt, likely meaning more layoffs. Click here to read that story.
