Help! I need Mexican Food!

Is there anywhere on the Northside/Northeast side that offers good Mexican food? We have been to Cancun, South of The Border, Don Pablos and all the other chain slop houses. We went to La Piedad in Broadripple upon the suggestion of a friend - not even close!

Look, I just want a decent handmade tortilla, some really great Carnitas and a cold beer in an atmosphere that doesn't seem like a freakin south-of-the-border circus!

Any and all suggestions for truly good Mexican food are welcome - Bring em on!

Let me know when you find one...I've been all over, nothing comes close to Mexican food I've had in California and Mexico. Almost all the ones out here are just mimics of each other...serving the same food with a different name. Nothing really "authentic" or unique on the North side, that I've encountered.

Try la hacinda or mi amigos...both are excellent and authentic

La Hacienda is one of my faves, but I haven't been to lots of the Mexican food restaurants in Indy. There was an extensive post (33 responses) awhile back covering local Mexican restaurants. Here is the link for it:

The only place to eat Mexican food in Indianapolis: Qdoba

i have a secret Mexican restaurant that i usually don't tell anyone about because i don't want to see it overflowing with white people but i will give up the ghost. i don't know what side of town it's considered because i still don't understand Indianapolis (i think it's the westside but it's worth the drive). the place is called Taquera del Maguey and it's on 38th street past Lafayette. easiest way to get there is to take 465 towards the airport, get off at 38th street and turn left. it'll be on your right about a mile up (behind steak n shake). it's the only Mexican comparable to LA. corn tortilla tacos are the best i've had since i moved. they have a taco called alambre which is a mix of beef, cheese and bacon all slow roasted together in a corn tortilla that is out of this world. they don't speak english (i think there's one english speaker worker in the backroom that they pull out from time to time) but that just adds to the coolness. check it out. it's worth the drive.

I'm all over that....my once a year trip to Cali, just can't cure my authentic Mexican fix. I will hit this up, but I don't know about bacon on my Mexican food...that sounds like a taco bell gimmick. I love when they don't speak English...lets me knows it's legit.

In that area, I have found a really good El Salvadorian restaurant that had some killer food. Just south of 38th off Lafayette...it was budget though, they had to take my credit card to the grocery they owned next door to scan it.

I like La Hacienda, but for more authentic dishes I would highly recommend 2 places. Both are not in the best of locations, but I have never had a problem going to either one.

El Sol de Tala at 2444 E Washington Street recently reopened and is great. Has some very different dishes besides the regular fare. The decor is very nice inside.

Don't even know what the other one is called, but it is located at 2939 E Michigan St. Small and more of a whole in the wall, but good food.

If you want quantity of quality La Bamba's is pretty awesome. It is always a good sign when a place's motto is: Burritos as big as your head."

Puerto Vallarta off of Lafayette Rd and 56th St on the west side is a great place, with great owners. Very authentic.

For Tex Mex I recommend the Build Your Own Burrito at On The Border.
