Hearing today on Indy workplace smoke ban
A City-County Council committee will hear public testimony tonight on a proposal to ban smoking in all workplaces, including bars, bowling alleys and nightclubs.
The ordinance, which strengthens an existing law prohibiting smoking in most restaurants and public spaces such as hotel lobbies, was introduced in council earlier this month.
It would give Indianapolis a comprehensive ban similar to those in 11 other Indiana communities and 26 states, including Illinois and Ohio.
Proponents say the expanded ban is needed to protect the health of people who work in places where smoking now is allowed.
But opponents, including some bar owners, argue the government should not interfere with anyone’s right to light up.
After the public hearing, the ordinance could go before council for a final vote later this month.
The hearing takes place at 5:30 p.m. in the Public Assembly Room of the City-County Building, 200 E. Washington Street.
