Hansbrough leads Irish to win vs. North Florida
Ben Hansbrough got off to quick start at Notre Dame.
The 6-3 guard, a transfer from Mississippi State and brother of Indiana Pacers rookie forward Tyler Hansbrough, had a career-high five 3-pointers and scored 19 points to spark the host Fighting Irish to an easy 86-65 victory over North Florida on Saturday.
Hansbrough, who sat out last season, was 5-of-5 from 3-point range after going 3-of-13 in Notre Dame’s two exhibition games.
“The exhibition games definitely shook a little bit of the rust off,” Hansbrough said. “I felt pretty relaxed.”
Hansbrough’s first 3-pointer gave the Irish a 13-2 lead, and his back-to-back 3-pointers seven minutes into the game resulted in a 21-5 advantage. The Irish led 47-16 at halftime.
“He needed a game like that to boost his confidence after the first two exhibitions,” said Irish senior forward Luke Harangody, who had 19 points and seven rebounds.
Coach Mike Brey said Hansbrough looked more comfortable.
“I think it was a big step for him of, ‘OK, I’ve got a feel of this system now,’ " Brey said.
Tim Abromaitis had 13 points for the Irish (1-0). Jonathan Peoples added 11 and Tory Jackson added nine points and seven assists.
Stan Januska had 14 points for North Florida (0-1), an Atlantic Sun member that finished 8-22 last season.
The victory marked the 11th consecutive season the Irish opened at home.
Harangody said a crowd about 1,000 shy of capacity that some fans have doubts about this year’s team.
“I think there’s still some nonbelievers in this team,” he said. “But when we start winning again, this place is going to be rocking.”
