'Hannah Montana' makes beautiful music at the box office
The 16-year-old singer scored another No. 1 film at the box office with Hannah Montana: The Movie, which opened to $34 million, according to studio estimates from Nielsen EDI.
The debut was $15 million more than many analysts projected and became her third No. 1 film, along with Bolt and Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.
The opening was plenty to leave Fast Furious in the dust. The fourth installment of the franchise dropped 59% from its debut to take second place and $28.8 million. The film, which reunites original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, has earned $118 million in 10 days.
The animated comedy Monsters vs. Aliens continues to chug along, taking in $22.6 million this weekend for third place. The cartoon is up to $141 million after three weeks.
Though it was no Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Seth Rogen's R-rated comedy Observe and Report had a respectable debut with $11.1 million, meeting most expectations.
The Nicolas Cage thriller Knowing rounded out the top 5 with $6.7 million. After a month in theaters, it has grossed $68 million.
The only other wide-release film opening this weekend, the sci-fi fantasy Dragonball Evolution, met its modest expectations with $4.7 million.
Ticket sales continued their blistering pace this year as grosses surged 62% over the same weekend in 2008.
Final figures are due today.
