Hamilton Co. pulling together flu plans
The Hamilton County Health Department might not have all the details yet, but it is moving ahead with plans to help administer the H1N1 vaccine.
There were more than 100 were in attendance at the Fall Pandemic Influenza Strategy Summit today at Grace Community Church in Noblesville. The group included municipal and county leaders, law enforcement officials health department and school representatives.
Chad Jenkins, the Hamilton County Health Department public health coordinator and planning section chief, felt it was an important step in developing a plan.
“It’s a great opportunity to get everybody in one location and share the same message,” he said. “We’re preparing. We’re moving forward with getting everybody together to start making those tough decisions on how we will handle it when we get vaccines released and we start seeing an increase of sick people.”
Jenkins said the vaccine is still being tested.
“The acceptance of the vaccine has not been done by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) yet,” Jenkins said. “We can’t wait for that to be done to figure out how we can speed that medication to the public because it’s their medicine. It’s not the health department or individual municipalities.”
One thing Jenkins and other health department officials stressed is the need to have one liaison between the health department and the schools to help distribute information and answer questions.
The plan is for school clinics to be set up to distribute the vaccine.
Jenkins said the health department previously met with hospital officials earlier this month.
Another strategy session has been set for Sept. 18.
