Greenwood to unveil trail plans; summer concert lineup released
The Greenwood Board of Parks and Recreation has its sights on trail creation throughout the city, Freedom Park road access and community concert entertainment.
The public can hear HNTB Corp.‘s presentation of the final draft of a Greenways&Trails five-year implementation plan at 7 p.m. March 11. The presentation will be during the board’s monthly meeting at the Greenwood Community Center, 100 Surina Way.
The plan’s aim is to at least connect schools and parks in the city by trails.
The board at its Wednesday night meeting discussed road access options into the 72-acre Freedom Park grounds near Averitt and Stop 18 roads on the city’s southwest side.
A recent successful remonstrance halted the board’s effort to issue $11.5 million in bonds to fund major improvements in the park, including a $6.5 million aquatic center to replace the 51-year-old central-city public swimming pool.
A paved trail and other work, including drainage and a retention pond, have been done at the park under a $1.11 million contract paid for from parks income from impact fees paid by developers of new homes in the city. The board is considering how best to spend at least some of the budgeted $525,000 available for road access into the park and a parking lot. The most significant entry option discussed is construction of a boulevard from Averitt Road.
Also at Wednesday’s meeting, board members were presented the complete 2009 Summer Concert Series lineup of musical performances and plays at the amphitheater behind the Community Center. One of the new additions is a 7 p.m. Aug. 15 performance by the United States Air Force Band of Flight from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
