Greenfield events celebrate art, artists
Arts enthusiasts descended on Greenfield on June 27 to view winning entries in this year’s Will Vawter Art Show, a contest sponsored by the Hancock County Arts and Cultural Council.
Artists also competed in the Vawter Plein Aire Contest. For the 12th year, contestants set up easels throughout Greenfield and completed paintings of scenes around them at a single setting.
The Vawter competition was named for artist John William Vawter. He’s known for illustrating many of James Whitcomb Riley’s poetry books and for founding the Brown County Art Colony in Nashville, Ind. At age 6, Vawter moved to Greenfield from West Virginia in 1877. He grew up in Greenfield.
The Vawter event was part of the Pennsy Trail Art Fair and Music Festival.
