A grass fire in a median temporarily shut down all four lanes of I-65 this afternoon.

Firefighters from nearby Greenwood and Franklin and several townships responded to the fire on I-65 about two miles south of the Greenwood Main Street exit.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 1 p.m.

The northbound lanes are open, and the southbound lanes were opened just after 1:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Anthony Emery of the Indiana State Police.

Emery did not know how the fire started. He cautioned against motorists throwing anything out of a vehicle window.

“It is a violation of state law and can be cited,” Emery said, emphasizing not throwing lit debris from a car.

“The law was put into effect to deter folks from throwing lit cigarettes out of the window.”
