Just heard there’s going to be a remake of “Gone With the Wind,” which sound like possibly THE single most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.

I am excited about the casting, though: Clive Owen as Rhett Butler, Amy Adams (whom I’d watch in most anything) as Scarlett O’Hara, and Jack Black taking Hattie McDaniel’s classic role as Mammy.

The idea is straight remake, shot-for-shot Gus Van Sant style, which means it’s going to be about 4 hours long. No word on an intermission (or whether they’ll reimburse you for a hotel stay).

What do you guys think? How will it turn out? Opening weekend box office receipts?

I’m very excited about this. I heard that they WERE going to get Matthew McConaughey to play the Rhett Butler part, but he had already committed to play Hamlet for the RSC this year.

Yes, and rumor has it he insisted on Kate Hudson to play Scarlett, and they were all set to do it, but Hudson dropped out after McConaughey did, citing “creative differences.”

No. No, no, no, no! Is nothing sacred?

Part of the neat the about GwtW is are the special effects that you don’t even notice and all the trials it took to complete. Another part is context: People were struggling through/out of the Great Depression. GwtW was beautiful and opulent and just what beauty-starved eyes needed to see on the silver screen. And, like, WHY? And who’s going to play Mammy? Or Prissy? Can we really — in good conscience — go see a movie with strong Black women and men playing slaves (No offense to Butterfly McQueen or Hattie McDaniel. You both were very strong, but forced to take those kinds of roles because of Hollywood at those times.) and getting bossed around by Amy McAdams?

How many more movies is Hollywood going to rape for profit?

Bah.

Wait — THIS is an April Fool’s joke, right?
