Giving dancers their due
B randon Bryant, the runner-up contestant on the fifth season of “So You Think You Can Dance,” says the televised talent search provides a spotlight that’s overdue.
“It’s the best thing that’s happened to dancers,” Bryant said. “We work the hardest, but we don’t get respected in the entertainment world. I think this show is starting to prove that dance is a force.”
Bryant is part of a “So You Think You Can Dance” tour that features 10 finalists from the season that aired May through August on Fox. The tour will make an Oct. 10 stop at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Known for his muscular physique, 20-year-old Bryant said he didn’t participate in sports while attending Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami. His schedule was too packed with dance.
“The track coach was really pushing for me to try out for the team,” Bryant said.
Two other Miami natives are part of the tour: Janette Manrara and season winner Jeanine Mason.
Ballet lessons began at age 10 for Bryant, who brought an acrobatic flair to the “So You Think You Can Dance” competition. When asked about innovation within his moves, Bryant mentions the execution of a double pirouette followed by a back tuck (or compact back flip).
“I’ve never seen it done,” he said during a phone interview. "I thought one day, ‘I wonder if I could do that.’ "
Bryant said the touring edition places a premium on personality.
“You should expect a lot of comedy. You get to know us, and we get to have fun with the audience.”
