A girl who celebrated her 12th birthday last weekend died when she was struck by a car on the Far Westside Tuesday night, police say.

Helaina Hawkins, 1400 block of Lansdowne Road, was with a group of young people crossing the street when she was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Impala at about 6:15 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Sgt. Paul Thompson said.

Helaina was wearing in-line skates, Thompson said. She died at the scene.

Investigators believe the driver, Clarence Waters, 60, Waterloo, Ind., was not impaired or speeding at the time of the crash, Thompson said. Waters was tested for drugs or alcohol, as required by state law for all fatal accidents.

The posted speed limit is 40 mph. The area has no cross walks, police said.
