INDIANAPOLIS — Lecretia Smith had 23 points, 12 rebounds and six steals to lead Fort Wayne Elmhurst to a 62-59 victory over Owen Valley in the Class 3A state girls high school basketball championship on Saturday.

The Trojans (25-2) won their first state title and became only the second program in school history to play for an Indiana High School Athletic Association state championship. The Elmhurst boys basketball team finished runner-up in 2003.

Heather Gonser had 22 points and Kaitlin Sweatman added eight points and seven rebounds for the Patriots (24-3), who were making their first state finals appearance.

After Owen Valley tied the score at 54 on Sweatman’s free throw with 3 minutes left, the Trojans went on an 8-0 run, sparked by Rosie Lewis’ six points, to open a 62-54 lead with 26 seconds left.
