A former Lafayette man stationed at the U.S. Army base in Fort Hood is being treated for two gunshot wounds, caused when another soldier opened fire Thursday afternoon at the post in Texas.

One bullet grazed Nathan A. Hewitt’s hip. A second bullet went through the 26-year-old’s calf, according to his uncles, Elmo Robledo and Rex Deaton, both of Lafayette.

“He seems to be fine. I questioned him about a few things,” Deaton said. "It all just happened so quick, and he was trying to get out of there.

“I asked if anyone was hit around him. He didn’t know.”

The gunfire, which began about 1:30 p.m., killed at least 12 people and wounded 31 others, according to Army officials.

A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Deaton said Hewitt was in a medical center getting vaccinations when a door swung open and people began yelling.

“The next thing he knew, shots were going off everywhere,” Deaton said. “He said he hollered at a bunch of soldiers to follow him. They escaped through some type of door.”

Hewitt’s injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, his uncles said.

Hewitt, a Jefferson High School graduate, is being treated for his injuries at a hospital, Robledo said.
