Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Blair Kiel was handcuffed and arrested at a weekend baseball game at Victory Field after arguing with a girlfriend and fighting with police.

The 47-year-old Kiel, of Fishers, faces preliminary charges of domestic battery, public intoxication and resisting law enforcement in the incident at an Indianapolis Indians game late Saturday.

A report from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the incident began with reports that Christy Rundle, 40, Noblesville, was in a restroom at the ballpark, crying and afraid to come out. Police found Kiel standing outside the restroom waiting for her and her child.

Police said witnesses reported that Kiel had grabbed the woman’s arm and he appeared intoxicated, smelling of alcoholic beverages, and with bloodshot and glassy eyes.

Police escorted Kiel toward the Maryland Street exit of the stadium and told him to leave for the night. However, Kiel was back inside the park a few minutes later and he was yelling at Rundle. He told police she was his girlfriend, according to the police report released late Sunday.

Police said Kiel shoved an off-duty Indianapolis police officer who was working security at the game and told Kiel again to leave the park.

Police said Kiel then fought with police, hitting an officer several times until police and stadium security could get him handcuffed.

He was taken to the Arrestee Processing Center.

Kiel was a standout high school football player at Columbus and started four years at quarterback at the University of Notre Dame in the early 1980s. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played with the Indianapolis Colts in the 1986-87 seasons before ending his playing career at Green Bay and the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League, retiring at the end of 1993 He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1998.

Back in Central Indiana, he’s worked with companies in real estate, in sales training and human development and other businesses.
